General Discussion
Phocomelia syndrome (PS) is an unusual birth defect that triggers serious abnormality, specifically of the upper limbs. The bones of the arms, and also in many cases other appendages, could be extremely reduced as well as absent. The fingers of the hands may be merged. A severe situation results in the absence of the upper bones of both the arms and legs to make sure that the hands and feet appear connected straight to the physical body. This is called tetraphocomelia.
This condition, PS, may be genetically transmitted within families as an autosomal recessive characteristic or could be the outcome of spontaneous (erratic) adjustments in the genetics. Because the signs of the condition so carefully simulate those caused by the consumption of thalidomide by expectant females, the term “pseudo-thalidomide” is frequently used.
